Long Island, New York
Channing Daughters is a unique winery in Bridgehampton on Long Island NY. About half its 14,000 case production comes from 28 acres of estate vineyards, and the other half is sourced on the North Fork from long-time partners.
Chris Tracy is the talented and adventurous wine-maker, working under the aegis of CEO Larry Perrine. Larry is a noted enologist and viticulturist and an authority on the soils and terroir of Long Island. They are known for their artisanal approach to farming and wine-making and their willingness to experiment.
Small plots are bottled separately and labelled with the appropriate AVA, be it North Fork, the Hamptons or Long Island. They grow over two dozen grape varieties and make a dizzying list of varietal and blended wines, still and sparkling.
Walter Channing, the founder, passed away in 2015 but is remembered in much more than name. He planted his first Chardonnay vines in 1982, bottling the first wine five years later. A Boston native and Harvard Business School graduate, Walter was a remarkable artist who worked primarily with found or reclaimed wood. In addition to making great art and starting a path-breaking winery he made the time to found and run a successful venture capital company. His creative spirit still informs the place.
