Marcello Monzio Compagnoni likes to introduce himself with ‘two wineries, two appellations, and two last names!’. He makes both Franciacorta and Valcalepio with single-minded passion. Franciacorta is justifiably regarded as the greatest Italian sparkling wine.
Marcello’s family did not have a long history in wine. He began his career in wine in 1989 by designing the cellars for his father after the latter had bought vineyards in Cenato Sotto (Valcalepio). Later, in 1995, these cellars had to be sold and new ones were temporarily found in the Franciacorta area, some 20 kilometres away. After his father passed away, Marcello took over the estate. Today that means taking care of 20 hectares of vineyards in Franciacorta and 14 hectares in Valcalepio. He is advised by top-oenologist Donato Lanati.
In Franciacorta, Marcello produces the Franciacorta Spumante DOCG (Metodo Classico) in four varieties: Brut, Extra Brut, Satèn and Rosé. The Extra Brut has twice won the ‘Tre Bicchieri’, but we have a particular fondness for the Satèn, which is the Franciacorta term for a blanc de blancs crémant or lower pressure sparkling wine made from white grapes.
