CA LA BIONDA
Valpolicella, Italy
The estate: twenty nine hectares of prime hillside vineyards at 150-300 meters. But it’s not just the vineyards that make Ca’ La Bionda stand out. The Castellani family are wine-growers through and through, and their sensitivity to terroir is unrivalled. They allow the limestone soils to express themselves in lively but elegant wines.
While the family takes enormous pride in their Amarones, it’s fair to say that their ‘normal’ wines are unusually serious. Not in a ‘more extract is better’ way. What distinguishes them is their purity and balance. In fact the same balance and freshness is palpable in the Amarones as well. It might seem strange to use the word elegant when talking of an Amarone, but Ca’ La Bionda’s certainly deserves the term.
Nico and Alessandro Castellani are gradually taking the reins of the winery from their father, Pietro. The wines have never been better.
