DOMAINE MARC MOREY

Chassagne Montrachet, France

The domaine was established in 1919 by Ferdinand Morey in the former coaching inn that the family still calls home. His son Marc joined him in 1944, and he in turn was joined by his daughter Marie-Joseph and his son-in-law, Bernard Mollard in 1977. Now it is their daughter Sabine Mollard who oversees the day-to-day running of things. In 2003 the cellars under the house and all the equipment were updated, and again in 2013. The wines have always received plaudits, but there is a lighter touch of late, with more freshness and minerality.

Of their 9.33 hectares, most are Chardonnay, with a little Aligote and Pinot Noir to round things out. Their holdings include a wide range of premiers crus. The vines, pruned to Guyot simple or Cordon de Royet, see strict de-budding to limit yields, leaf-thinning where necessary. The rows are ploughed year-round, and vine treatments are limited in scope and targeted. Respect for the environment is paramount.

Vinifications are adapted to the prevalent vineyard conditions and vary from vintage to vintage. But the wines generally see 10 months on the lees for whites, with 25-30% new barrels. Filtration is light, and again adapted to the vintage.

Sabine aims to capture finesse and freshness rather than opulence.
