MAISON MATISCO
Davayé, France
Brothers Richard and Stéphane Martin began Maison Matisco in 2015 with a singular purpose: to produce high quality white Burgundy from the Mâcon at approachable prices. They were well aware that the robust demand for wines of this ilk far outpaced supply - a challenge only exacerbated by the Mâcon's ascendent prestige in the marketplace.
Here in the village of Davayé, in the shadow of the towering Roche Solutré de Vergisson, there is something mystical in the very air. The wines generally use fruit of their own harvest, though they reserve the right to purchase grapes from well-established neighbors, all certified organic. The brothers capture the unique terroir of this special corner of Burgundy: marly limestone with siliceous stones dating back to the Jurassic period.
Stéphane works the family properties, Croix-Senaillet and Mont-Épin, boots in the dirt and eyes on the vines, most of which are over the age of 40 years. Richard manages the winery and cellar, ushering each harvest from vine to bottle. Grapes are pressed gently with pneumatic press, and a combination of lees ageing and malolactic fermentation are harnessed to impart body and richness to go along with a certain cumulative acidity the wines all share.
