DOMAINE SALADIN
Cotes du Rhone, France
Sisters Elisabeth and Marie-Laurence are the latest Saladin wine-growers in St Marcel d’Ardèche, a little village that sits at the mouth of the famous gorges of the Ardèche. The family are first recorded as growers here in 1422! After 20 generations of making wine, we might expect the family to have picked up a thing or two. They have. The sisters share duties, but Marie-Laurence is more responsible in the vineyard and cellar, Elisabeth takes care of more of the business side. They have worked in many other wineries in France and abroad, including one internship with Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon. They are quick to credit their various mentors: their father and uncle for passing down the wisdom of the ages, the oenologist Andree Jovine (Gramenon, Beaucastel) and many others.
Their wines are characterized by a great purity of fruit and elegance. Otherwise the cuvees vary in density and local expression.
